Coopersale Football Club

The Coopersale football team has reformed due largely to the efforts of Ian Morris and his supportive wife Tracey. They felt that children get to a certain age when there is nothing for them to do except hang around the streets where they are likely to get into trouble, be accused of vandalism or of being a nuisance just by association. A group of parents from the school were aware of this and decided to do something about it. Hence the reformation of Coopersale FC for both girls and boys from 10 - 16 years old. The Club is part of the Harlow League and trains on Saturdays between 2-4 o'clock at St John's school playing fields; games are usually on a Sunday. In their first season, 2004/5, the under 16's did very well finishing at the top of their league and the other teams did well also.

This is a new club starting from nothing so there is much to do. There is a small Management Committee which has already put a lot into place; a Child Protection Officer has been appointed, CRB checks are being done and should be in place by next season. However, because there is so much to do the Club desperately needs more Committee members so if you are interested in helping to build up this club please contact Ian on 0785 460 8886 and perhaps you could come along to the next meeting. They are also lucky enough to have four Coaches, one for each team and a floating Head Coach. All the club needs now is more members. So if you are a boy or a girl, between 10-16 years old and would like to come and meet some new friends, keep fit and have fun give Ian a call on the above number.

Little Ark Chocolate Day

Saturday 19th March was Littel Ark's Chocolate Day. We awoke on Saturday morning to glorious sunshine, not thinking it would last we set up the Chocolate Day inside at the hall, about one hour before blast off it was obvious that the weather was not going to change so we hastily moved everything into the garden. The day was a tremendous success, we had a delicious chocolate cake stall, chocolate fondues, decorate an egg, face painting, refreshments, decorate a biscuit and hook a duck to name but a few. We even had a special visitor in the shape of our resident Easter Bunny who, along with about 70 other people, joined in the Easter Egg hunt which the children enjoyed. We raised nearly £300.00.

New Year's Eve Disco Raises over £500

The New Year's Eve Disco organised by Doreen Pavitt raised £549 for hall funds, which need topping up after the expense of a new floor. The raffle prizes, including a meal voucher for two at the Theydon Oak, had all been donanted. The winner of a bottle of whisky genersously offered it for aucton to raise additional funds for the Tsunami appeal; it was knocked down for £25.

The next major project is to replace the curtains throughout the hall. Forthcoming planned functions include a Valentine's disco on 12th February and Jazz Night on 12th March. Click here for more details.

New Floor Finished

The new floor was laid during the summer holidays and has already been greatly admired. The project was only possible due to many generous donations and tremendous fund raisng efforts.

The total cost was just under £8,000, of which £7,000 was raised from EFDC (£1,900), Essex Community Foundation (£1500), Anonymous Resident (£500), North Weald Market Traders (£165), Coopersale Snooker Club (£100), Coopersale Group 2000 (£50), Music Hall Evening (£1440), Fund raising events & other gifts (£1440)

Click here to see the floor, which was laid by First Floors of Romford. The floor is solid Merbau hardwood and should last for many years as long as we all take care of it.

Essex Community Foundation Grant

The Essex Community Foundation has approved a grant of £1,500 towards the cost of replacing the hall floor.

New Coopersale Institute Secretary

The Institute Committee has appointed a new secretary, Fiona Verhagen.

Fiona has lived in Coopersale all her life. With young children (unlike other, older, members of the committee) we hope that Fiona will be able to provide the committee with an insight into how best we can meet the needs of families in the village.

Councils Approve Grants for Institute

Epping Forest District and Epping Town Councils have both approved grants for improvements to the Coopersale Institute Hall. The Town Council has agreed to provide £600 towards the cost of the new front doors and the District Council has approved a grant of £1,500 towards the cost of the new floor.

The latter project is subject to additional funding being obtained from other sources. We have applied to the Community Fund (National Lottery) and a number of fund raising functions are being planned, details of which will be published shortly. Please support these activities. Two years ago one generous family in the village gave us a gift of £100 towards the cost of rendering the outside of the building; perhaps we will receive a few donations this year for the floor. All gifts no matter how large or small will be gratefully received and the donors wishes for publicity or anonymity will be respected.

Parklands Improvements

As many will have noticed the improvements to the area outside the Parklands shops is underway. The CCTV cameras have been installed and are already working. A new lamp standard has been erected and will be painted as soon as the weather permits. The bollard lights have been removed and the "egg-box" paving will be removed during the week commencing 24 Feb, after which the area will be turfed and a new bed, trees and some additional paving laid. The work should be completed by the end of March.

Feb 2003

Institute Play Area

Over the last six months, there have been repeated cases of vandalism and anti-social behaviour on the play area at the rear of the Institute car park. There has been damage to fencing, graffiti, broken glass and damage to neighbours' property, as well as rowdy behaviour late at night. Notices have been posted warning that if the situation did not improve, consideration would be given to closing the site. The only reaction to these warnings received by the committee was that it should be closed.

The Institute Committee and Epping Town Council which has leased the site for many years and maintained it as a public amenity have therefore agreed that the high cost of maintaining the play area for public use can no longer be justified. The Council will give up the lease and the area will be secured.
It will still be available to groups hiring the hall. The committee will discuss the possibility of allowing responsible individuals to book and use it in an acceptable manner.

LITTLE ARK ROBBED AND VANDALISED

The St Alban's Parish Rooms were broken into on the evening of Monday 25th. Property belonging to the Little Ark Pre-school were damaged and stolen. A new laptop computer, TV and video recorder were stolen, as well as money which had been collected for a Christmas party for the children. The thieves also broke into presents which had been prepared for the children for Christmas and took a set of keys for the building which had just been fitted with new locks, necessitating yet another change of locks. Fortunately many parents and well-wishers are rallying round to replace some of the items, but the young children are naturally upset by the incident.

Anyone who has any information about who the perpetrators of this crime should contact Epping police on 01992 561212

MORE IMPROVEMENTS FOR PARKLANDS SHOPPING PARADE

Epping Forest District Council has shortlisted a range of improvements for the Parklands shopping parade based on the consultation which took place prior to last year's work. Additional funding is available for more work to be carried out this financial year and the Council would welcome comments on the shortlisted ideas. They have been circulated to local residents and are reproduced below.

1. Installing a CCTV system with six cameras and digital recording equipment. This will monitor the area below the covered way and the immediate paved area outside the shops.

2. Additional lighting outside the shops with four vandal resistant lights mounted below the covered way and a wall mounted light to each end elevation. Redecorating the covered way.

4. Removing the existing 'bollard lights' and replacing them with a new streetlight to match the existing design.

5. Repairing and rebuilding the existing brick planters.

6. Resurfacing the tarmac in front of the shops with new tarmac and cleaning the existing paving slabs below the covered way. Installing a small cycle rack and renewing the damaged bin.

If you have any comments, please complete and return the questionnaire which was attached to the circular or contact Mr S Mitchell at EFDC on 01992 564548

HALL FLOOR REPAIRED

During the short summer break we have taken the opportunity to lift part of the floor in the hall which was showing signs of sagging. The problems were caused by several floor joists which had rotted and snapped. It was apparent that the problme was not a new one as many of the failed joists were replacements for the originals. The cause of the problem appears to be lack of ventilation of the space under the floor in the area of the kitchen and ladies' toilet. The rotten woodwork has been replaced and we are in the process of adding a few vents in the floor to provide ventialtion. We hope that the problems are confined to this area an dthat we won't have to carry out any more major structural repairs.

If you use, or help to look after, the hall, please help by avoiding spilling liquid on the floor. Use a damp (but not wet) cloth or mop and clean up spillages as quickly as possible to prevnet them soaking in and weakening the floor.

COOPERSALE PRE-SCHOOL EXCELLENT SAYS OFSTED

Coopersale Pre-School which operates from the Social Institute Hall had its first OFSTED inspection last week and was rated as excellent by the assessors. Cathy Kemp is delighted with the result, especially as the inspectors agreed that the number of places could be increased, allowing children on the waiting list to start.

Following the success of last year's summer holiday opening, Cathy intends to keep the school open for the first four weeks of this summer holiday. In September, she plans to use the Institute's newly refurbished reading room as a quiet area for reading and writing.

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

Golden Jubilee celebrations in Coopersale were muted with the main activities cancelled due to the lack of support. Only a small number turned out for the Tea party on Monday, but those who did enjoyed an excellent tea of sandwiches, scones and delicious cakes, which had been generously provided by members of St Alban's Church congregation. A quiz and raffle added to the enjoyment and resulted in some money being raised for St Alban's Church and Institute funds. Special thanks are due to Mary Knight for organising this festive occasion.

A few residents decorated their houses, although several seem to have been more motivated by World Cup fever rather than support for the Queen's Jubilee. Vicarage Road had the highest concentration of decorated houses with No 7, the home of Doreen and Len Pavitt, being judged the winner. Len, who won the prize for the competition held on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee, had said that he didn't want to win again, so left the work of decorating their house to son Martin, who wins a bottle of champagne. Len and Doreen's talents were not wasted, as they masterminded the decoration of the Institute hall. The Maureen Clarke of 16 Vicarage Road and Mr and Mrs Barker, 21 St Alban's Road had also gone to considerable trouble to decorate their houses and were judged equal second by the judges.

Jubilee Parties Cancelled

The Family Disco and Children's Party which had been planned for the Jubilee weekend have had to be cancelled due to lack of support. The Tea Party for residents over the age of 50 will still be held and it is hoped that a number of houses will be decorated. If you want to have your efforts judged in the competion for the bottle of champagne, please contact dave Keehner on 578521. This offer is only applicable for houses within Coopersale.

Hall Refurbishment Progress

The limewash has been completed and the "building site" at the back of the hall is being cleared up prior to being re-turfed to make a small recreatiuon area. We are aiming to complete this before the Golden Jubilee celebrations. We also need to paint the window frames, clean the windows and repair and re-paint the window cills and get a new front door; any help with these tasks would be greatly appreciated. Contact Chris on 572568 if you can help with any of these jobs.

AGM

The Coopersale Social Institute Annual General Meeting will take place in the Hall on Wed 8th May, starting at 8pm. If you would like to help the community by joining the committee, or know someone else who would be willing to, this is your chance; simply contact Peter Newton on 574564 and give him the details. Even if you don't want to take an active part why not come along and hear about the different activities in the community.
